Why you should take an Inventory of your personal property

Why everyone should take an inventory of their personal property

Have you ever asked yourself-What stuff do I have? How much is it worth?

I wanted to reach out regarding something I’ve sadly seen happen again and again…after something like a tornado, a fire, or any other major disaster, folks want to be close with family, friends, and neighbors—not panicked about putting together an exhaustive list of the things they lost. All too often these are questions that we ask ourselves, after a loss or claim has already occurred. A Fire consumes your home, a burst pipe ruins your furniture and clothes, a tornado rips through your neighborhood, .

If you don’t have an up-to-date personal property inventory, or if you haven’t updated an old paper one in years, it’s easier than ever to create one. Just grab your smartphone and get going! Here are a few quick tips:

  • Record a complete video walk-thru of your home, narrating details about your property as you go. Include:
    • Description of the item
    • Model, serial number, and manufacturer (if applicable)
    • Cost and purchase date (to the best of your memory)
  • After the video walk-thru, take photos from various angles of every room in your home. Make sure to include light fixtures, flooring, and items in dressers, cabinets, and closets.
  • Don’t forget to photograph items such as jewelry, silver, or valuable collections.
  • Take photos of any receipts or instruction manuals to document high-ticket items.
  • When finished, upload your videos and photos to a cloud-based storage platform such as iCloud or Google Photos.

We hope you never need your inventory list, but we want it to be there if you do. If you have questions about what to document—or how you can best protect your home and personal property, give us a call. We are here to help.
