How Does Commercial Auto Insurance Work?

Connecticut companies using vehicles for everyday business must meet the state’s minimum commercial auto insurance requirements. Commercial auto insurance is designed to provide businesses with financial protection. The policies that may be included with a commercial auto insurance plan are highly customizable, so it’s crucial to work closely with your agent to get appropriate coverage.

Depending on the type of vehicles your company uses, you may also be required to adhere to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) insurance rules. Your agent can help you navigate the various requirements as they apply to your company’s situation.

What Commercial Auto Insurance Is Required?

Connecticut requires commercial auto insurance policies to include at least the minimum amount of liability insurance, including the following:

  • Property liability auto insurance may help cover your company’s legal liability for third-party accident-related property damage up to the policy’s limits.

  • Bodily injury liability auto insurance may help cover your company’s legal liability for third-party accident-related injuries up to the policy’s limits.

Your agent can help you understand Connecticut’s current minimum liability requirements. They may recommend purchasing more than the minimum required amount of auto liability coverage.  a person driving a car

If your company leases or finances vehicles, your lienholder typically requires full coverage insurance, which may include the following:

  • Comprehensive insurance may help pay to repair or replace the covered vehicle after a non-collision-related incident such as theft, vandalism, fire damage or storm damage.

  • Collision insurance may help pay to repair or replace the covered vehicle after a collision with another vehicle or object.

  • Guaranteed asset protection (Gap) insurance may help pay off the financed or leased vehicle if it’s a total loss after a covered accident or incident.

After an accident, your insurance company may provide a settlement to help you repair or replace the covered vehicle. Your company may be responsible for paying the deductible first.

What Optional Commercial Auto Policies Can I Get In Connecticut?

Depending on the risks and perils faced by your company, your agent may recommend that you purchase the following additional coverage:

  • Towing coverage

  • Roadside assistance

  • Auto glass coverage

  • Medical payments (MedPay)

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
