How do you get into insurance as a career?

How did you get into Insurance?

This is a question I love to ask and be asked. I am not sure I have heard the same answer twice from an insurance agent, underwriter, marketer, owner or adjuster because much of the time—it wasn’t planned! Some of us were in the right place at the right time with families in the industry, others needed a business job outside of college and tried it out and stayed, some of us were ready for a different career path and thought, why not?

I guarantee that when you were 5 years old if someone asked you—“what do you want to be when you grow up?” You would not have responded with—“Insurance agent please, Mom!” When you are little you want to be a princess, a firefighter, a fashion model or a singer when you grow up. We associate these people as “Heroes” when we are small and we all want to be heroes. But when we are small, we don’t realize that heroes can be everyday people too.

Insurance agents are sometimes perceived as pushy salesmen from the public and are immediately turned off by it. Before I got into the industry I thought the same thing. But I have come to realize that in this industry, protecting people comes first before all. I have seen insurance agents turn down big money policies because they didn’t feel right about it, it wouldn’t protect the people it was meant to protect and they refused to take that on-even if it meant losing out on their biggest “sale” of the year. Ethics is a HUGE part of our everyday in insurance.

If you enjoy people, business, challenges and learning something new every day; I would highly recommend insurance as a career. There is a never a dull day and there are so many different jobs within the arena of insurance that you wouldn’t be stuck in one occupation. You could start out as a customer service rep answering the phone, move up to be a Personal lines account manager handling people’s home and autos, over to a commercial lines account manager insuring businesses, to the company side as an Underwriter. If you prefer to be out in the field more; try being a producer, adjuster or marketer. If you prefer the mathematics and statistics side-you could go into coding in the background for insurance websites and platforms and management systems. There is insurance law, Predictive analytics, data analytics, weather modeling, catastrophe response and the list goes on.

If you are interested in hearing more about the insurance industry, I would urge you to call your local agent and ask to chat with the Agency Principal. They would be happy to talk to you and would probably have all kinds of stories to share. Feel free to call us today to hear more about your future in insurance!
